Reverend U. G. Redic
Our pastor, Ulis G. Redic, was born to Joel and Ozell Redic on November 8, 1953 in Oakland, California. He and his older sister Patsy grew up in Richmond. Pastor Redic graduated from John F. Kennedy High School. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1972 and worked as a dental technician.
Pastor Redic trusted Christ for salvation as a boy at the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. A. H. Newman. He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church, Pastor Willie J. Hall, from 1980-1982. In 1983 Pastor Redic united with the St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church of Richmond under the leadership of Pastor John H. Green. As an usher at St. Luke, Pastor Redic met and married Sister Diane Malone. God has blessed Pastor and Sister Redic with six children, Timothy, Shana, Charles, Toronce, Ulysha, and Ulis Joel.
Pastor Redic acknowledged God’s “calling” into the preaching ministry in 1987 at St. Luke. The text for his first sermon, Be Thankful For All Things All The Time”, was taken from his favorite passage of Scripture, Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
In mid 1996, due to illness, Pastor Steve Jones, of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, began to request Rev. Redic to preach at Mt. Zion on certain Sundays. Pastor Jones retired in December 1996. Mt. Zion elected Pastor Redic on December 28, 1996.
Pastor Redic is bi-vocational. He has been employed by Alameda County as a risk management professional. Because of his time constraints, his initial and on-going commitment to Mt. Zion is to provide two spiritual feedings a week, Sunday morning and Wednesday night, week in and week out. Pastor believes that his most important job is to feed the flock and that anything else the Lord allows him is “gravy”. Some of the gravy that God has provided under his leadership includes:
People: Membership has grown spiritually and numerically; Three “sons” in the ministry; three deacon ordinations, scores of new converts and baptisms, Deaconess Board, Christian Education Department
Programs: Adult Computer training; after-school tutoring program; workshops on finances, sexuality, burial expenses; free income tax preparation for needy and elderly
Property: Rebuilding of the south wall of the church building; the purchase and remodel of 245 Fifth Street, our Christian Education facility; the purchase of the former Muslim mosque at 420 MacDonald; the purchase of the vacant lot and building on Fifth and MacDonald; remodel of the church’s women’s restroom facilities.
Pastor Redic is a lover of education. He has earned degrees from the College of Alameda, University of San Francisco, and Golden State School of Theology. Pastor Redic insists that the goal of education is not to “talk over anyone’s head”, but to be better able to “make it plain”. After ten years of preaching and teaching he thanks God that people still come to church.
Pastor Redic is a simple man and constantly reminds Mt. Zion of two simple things:
God truly planted our Pastor, Ulis G. Redic, into a committed, cooperative and loving church family. We look forward to a bright future as we all continue to grow together in grace, love, and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
